Welcome to Family of Pets!

When we say “From Our Family to Yours” . . . . we really mean it! We are a family-owned business with immediate as well as extended family members involved at every level of the company. Our standards are higher and our customer service is better because our name is at stake!

John began working for Pass Pets cleaning kennels when he was in college in 1977. Over time, he worked his way into sales, then management and finally as a District Manager. When Pass Pets closed their Michigan locations in 1998 John and Debbie purchased 3 of the stores and renamed them Family of Pets! In 1999 the Livonia store was added and in 2003 our newest prototype Novi location born, allowing us to completely encircle the Detroit Metropolitan area to serve you!

John has served for nine years on the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Companion Animal Advisory Committee representing the Pet Store industry (the only pet store owner selling dogs to do so) and joined the effort to rewrite Michigan Act 287 , requiring pet stores to pay $100 per year instead of the former one time fee, thereby generating the necessary money to fund more inspections of pet stores in Michigan by the Department of Agriculture. The committee is currently revamping the Michigan Regulation #151 to include any and all entities that handle animals in Michigan, not just some pet stores and shelters. The new law will give authority to the Dept. of Agriculture over: groomers, trainers, foster homes, rescue leagues and all pet stores not just the ones that sell puppies and kittens.

John and Debbie are on the governing board of the NexPet Group, a group of 280 independently owned pet stores nationwide that combine knowledge and know-how on everything from trends to techniques that will better position us in the industry we love.

Family of Pets is successful because we have the years of experience it takes to not only find the very best in companion animals, but also the expertise to keep them healthy and safe as they wait for you to come and take them home.
